Duque Marino earns her first career WTA title in Bogota
This is the first career WTA title win for Colombian Mariana Duque Marino who beat fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-4 6-3 to win the Copa Colsanitas clay court tournament final, here in Bogota, Colombia on Sunday.
It took one hour, 20 minutes for Mariana to wrap up the match, as she won last three games of the first set and then took the second set by winning five of the last six games.
Before this title win, Marino reached the quarterfinal here two years ago. She is the first WTA singles Colombian champion since Fabiola Zuluaga who won five titles in a row from 1999 to 2004.
Duque Marino reaches maiden WTA final on home soil
The Cinderella story continued for home favourite Mariana Duque Marino when she beat tournament's eighth seed Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain 6-4, 7-5 to reach the maiden Sony Ericsson WTA Singles final on home soil at the XVIII Copa BBVA Colsanitas, being played here in Bogota, Colombia.
"I'm very happy. I don't know what else to say. I just can't wait until tomorrow!" Duque Marino said. "This is very good for me and for Colombia. I'm very proud to make my first final here. It was a really close match but one of us had to win and it was me. I'm a little tired right now but I will be fine for tomorrow."
In the other semifinal, Argentine Gisela Dulko, the top seed lost to fifth seed and first time Sony Ericsson WTA tour finalist Angelique Kerber, who registered a convincing 7-5, 6-3 win in 86 minutes of play.
"It's my first final on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, so I'm very happy," Kerber said. "I'm hapy to win against Dulko because she's a great player. I had nothing to lose and just tried playing my best on every point. I fought until the end. It has been a great tournament for me here. It's my first time here and I like Bogotá a lot. The people have been supporting me really well."
Dulko eases into Bogota Semis, Errani stunned
Top seeded Argentine Gisela Dulko registered a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Czech Sandra Zahlavova in just 70 minutes to reach the semifinals of the 2010 Copa BBVA Colsanitas, being played here in Bogota, Columbia.
Meanwhile, third seeded Italian Sara Errani suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja, losing 7-5, 6-2 in an 84 minute match to bow out of the event.
In another quarterfinal match from the day, German Angelique Kerber edged past Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier 6-1, 6-4 to move to the last four.
Unseeded Columbian Mariana Duque Marino kept the home fans' hopes alive when she took out Czech seventh seed Klara Zakopalova 6-0, 7-6(4) to reach her maiden Sony Ericsson WTA tour semifinals.
