Defending champion and top seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva cruised to 6-3 6-2 victory in straight sets against her compatriot Ksenia Pervak at the PTT Pattaya Open on Tuesday.
Zvonareva will now face Italian Alberta Brianti in the second round, who edged past Sacha Jones of New Zealand in three sets 6-4 4-6 6-1.
Fourth seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan scored a routine 6-2 6-4 victory over Ayumi Morita of Japan and eighth seed Julia Goerges of Germany knocked out Greek qualifier Anna Gerasimou 6-4 6-4.
Localite Tamarine Tanasugarn crushed her opponent Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1 6-2 and Taipei’s Kai-Chen Chang battled past wild card Varatchava Wongteanchai 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 ,while Kazak Sesil Karatantcheva beat Suchanun Viratprasert 6-1 7-5.
Also, Russian Ekaterina Bychkova needed three sets to prevail against qualifier Nudnida Luangnam 6-7(7) 6-1 7-6(3).
