Youzhny made a bad start to the match and lost his serve early on to give Wawrinka a lead, and then the set by 6 games to 3. The second set brought the best out of both players who tested each other to limits to push it into the tie-break which Youzhny won by 9 points to 7 to level things up in the match.
The third set gave Wawrinka a quick 3-0 lead with the help of which he raced to a formidable two sets to one lead in the match. The onset of the fourth set brought a similar lead in favour of the Russian who took full advantage of it to square off the match once again at two sets all.
The decider saw Youzhny get an early 2-0 lead which was immediately squandered by the Swiss with the help of his blistering forehand winners. As the match progressed, Wawrinka once again lost his serve and gave Youzhny a crucial lead which he duly consolidated and broke the Swiss' serve one last time to complete the four hour marathon with a 3-6, 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 scoreline.
Youzhny now meets the winner of the match between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco who take courts in a few minutes.
