Defending champion and seventh seeded Nikolay Davydenko was shown the exit door by Colombian qualifier Robert Farah 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of BMW Open on Monday.
Another former champion Mikhail Youzhny, who won the title in 2010, battled past localite Philipp Petzschner 7-5, 7-5 victory to reach the second round.
"I like to be here and I have some friends here," Youzhny said. "It’s a nice atmosphere in the tournament. It’s nice weather today, it’s a holiday, it was a full stadium. It looked like we played a final, there were almost no seats."
In all German clash, former World no 2 Tommy Haas eased past countryman Michael Berrer 6-0, 6-2 to set up next round clash with top seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"I look forward to that," said Haas. "It’s obviously a very good test to see yourself against a Top 10 player."
In another match of the day, eighth seeded Marcos Baghdatis defeated Germany’s Tobias Kamke 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and will next face qualifier Dustin Brown, who defeated another qualifier Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-3.
