Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada did not disappoint her home fans on Tuesday night, as she rallied past Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 7-5, 7-6 (5) and secured her berth in the second-round at the Rogers Cup.
Currently ranked as World No. 55 in WTA Rankings, Aleksandra Wozniak could not convert three match points early on in the second set, but played tremendously in the tie-breaker to beat World No. 35 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.
After the match, Wozniak said, ''I tried to finish it when I had the match points, but it wasn't easy. She further added that ''I gave everything on every point. It was important for me to win here.''
Earlier in the day, French Open runner-up Roberta Vinci of Italy rallied in the third-set to beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. In the next round, Vinci takes on 11th-seeded Ana Ivanovic, the 2006 Rogers Cup winner.
In other matches, Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa beat Stephanie Dubois of Canada, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0; Ekaterina Makarova of Russia eased past Urszula Radwanska of Poland 6-4, 6-2; and Tamira Paszek of Austria defeated Julia Goerges of Germany 6-2, 6-1.
In the next round, Paszek will take on top-seeded Victoria Azarenka.
