2009 U.S. Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki led the charge of seeded players to enter the quarterfinals of the 2010 Pilot Pen Tennis Championships, a WTA Premier event being held in New Haven, Connecticut.
Wozniacki, the top seed, breezed past Lucky Loser Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-1 in just 81 minutes with the help of 6 aces and trademark groundstrokes.
Meanwhile, fourth seed and former World No.3 Elena Dementieva survived a massive struggle and a marathon 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-4 scoreline to overcome Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.
"It was a great fight. She is very difficult to play as she is very solid from the baseline," said Dementieva, who had won the pair's first four meetings in straight sets but lost in Tokyo last fall. "It was a long, physical game, but I had to hang in and find a way to win. I just want to play as many matches as I can."
In another exciting match, former World No.1 Dinara Safina, who has been granted a wild card here, defeated the leggy Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 7-6(4), 7-6(2) to enter the last eight of the tournament. She now meets compatriot and Australian Open quarterfinalist Maria Kirilenko, who crushed Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-1 to move ahead in the draw.
Another Russian in the draw, Nadia Petrova also emerged victorious against American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands, winning 6-3, 6-2 in just 67 minutes of play.
The quarterfinal line-up was completed when Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli and Italian Flavia Pennetta registered easy wins over their respective opponents.
