With Serena Williams still recuperating from an injury early in the year, the women's game becomes extremely hard to predict. With defending champion Kim Clijsters also eliminated early by Victoria Azarenka, it was the Belarusian who took the tennis world by storm.
This year’s champions at the Grand Slams had something to prove and as such, redefined each of their respective careers.
Azarenka displaced best friend Caroline Wozniacki from the top of the WTA charts, and it was like the two had decided to hijack the world of tennis, if not one then the other.
By the end of the year it was the Serena Williams who was crowned queen once again, as the the younger Williams sister clinched Wimbledon, the Olympic Gold and the US Open title.

Yeah we're trapped in a 18 month old time warp. The top girls hate Vika. She doesn't make it easy for them, but she's better than all of them bar Serena.

When Serena is committed to winning, it's very hard to get past her. And Azarenka is not best friends with Caroline Wozniacki......
