Wimbledon 2014: Wawrinka strolls, Lisicki and Raonic scrape through to the quarter-finals
World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka set up a blockbuster quarterfinal with seven-time champion Roger Federer after he defeated grass court specialist Feliciano Lopez in straight sets. Milos Raonic too extended his run at The Championships as he too made it through to the same stage of the tournament in London. In the women's section, last year's finalist Sabine Lisicki powered her way past Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in an intriguing three set fight in an hour and 59 minutes.

Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka today ended the run of grass-court specialist Feliciano Lopez 7-6(5), 7-6(7), 6-3 to sail though to the last eight at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. The 5th seed looked determined and played exceeding well all though the match. During crucial moments in the encounter, the No. 1 Swiss held on to his nerves very well and raised his level of play whenever required. Wawrinka will now lock horns with former World No. 1 and his best friend Roger Federer in an all Swiss quarterfinal match.

It's going to be fun, I hope, on grass at Wimbledon, it's going to be something special," said Wawrinka about his quarterfinal match against Federer.

"I'm happy with how I'm playing so far. It's going to be tough after two matches in two days, but I'll do everything I can to be ready."

"It was a tense match, playing against him (Lopez) on grass is tough."

"Winning the first tie-break was important as there was a lot of tension out there. There was a bit of tension out there between us, but that's just because you both want to win so much."

"I was trying to be really aggressive, serve strong and come to the net."

On Court No. 3, budding star Milos Raonic shattered the dreams of Japanese 10th seed Kei Nishikori as he defeated him 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-3 in two hours and twenty six minutes. After losing the first set, the big serving Canadian raised his intensity to storm back into the match to win the following three sets. Raonic has now become the first man from Canada to enter in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in the Open era. In his last 8 encounter he will compete against 19-year-old Australian Nick Kyrgios, who stunned His compatriot World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in a high voltage match.

In the Women’s draw, last year’s runner-up Sabine Lisicki, battled hard with a shoulder injury before she shut the door for Yaroslava Shvedova in their pre-quarterfinal match. The German took a controversial injury break and came back with a bang to win the third set 6-4. Lisicki sought the trainer’s attention after she double-faulted to give away an easy break in the third game of the final set.

Later, she rubbished the arguments that her medical time-out had been pre-planned. 'The timing was very unfortunate,' she said.

“I hit a ball before, and it just went into my back. I tried to keep going. I played a few points but I wasn't able to lift my arm.”

“It was obvious. I was serving 50 miles an hour or something. I don't remember if I ever served that slow in my life before. That's why I had to call the trainer.”
