If there ever was an overwhelming favorite to any Grand Slam event in the recent past, it is Serena Williams at Wimbledon 2013. The American may well have been the top seed and the favorite to clinch a sixth title at the lawns of the All England Club this year before the start of the event, but with the mass big name casualties it may well be a stroll in the park like never before for the younger Williams.
With rivals Victoria Azarenka, Samantha Stosur, Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova all out of the event there are only 3 players out of the rest of the pack in who own a win over Serena now. Marion Bartoli, Li Na and Sloane Stephens have combined got the three wins over the American – something that reiterates how dominant Serena has been over the last decade and a half.
It is hence very difficult to see anyone but Serena Williams lifting the trophy come the 6th of June. What adds further impetus to the notion is the fact that only 3 players out of the pack have ever experienced winning a Grand Slam out of the sixteen. Na Li and 2011 champion Petra Kvitova coupled with Serena of course make the three once again highlighting the dearth of challengers to the 31 year-old who appears to be going from strength to strength with every passing Grand Slam.
Having faced defeat just twice this year, one of the greatest women’s players of all time has 6 titles against her name already as she looks for her fourth Grand Slam title in exactly a year.
Across the net stands a brilliant German, who goes by the name of Sabine Lisicki. The 24 year-old packs immense power in ground-strokes and can surprise opponents with venom in her strokes. Another exceedingly underrated aspect of her game is her serve, when on song, Lisicki’s serves are like cannon balls being launched from just 24 meters.
The German will need to come into the match with a “nothing to lose” attitude as if she wins it’ll be one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history, while a loss would mean something that is widely expected.
Head to Head: This is the third time that these two are facing one another, and in the last two meetings Lisicki was never able to get even a set off the 16-time Grand Slam champion.
