World No.1 and defending champion Serena Williams has been in some threatening form as she lifted her sixth title on the go at Roland Garros. Coming to Wimbledon without any match practice on grass has not hampered the American’s performance as she swept aside her previous two opponents. She next takes a tennis veteran in the form of Japanese Kimiko Date Krumm for a place in the Fourth Round at the All England Club.
Gunning to lift her 53rd Career Title, Williams comes to the All England Club after lifting titles at the Sony Open, the Family Circle Cup, Mutua Madrid Open and the International BNL d'Italia and the recently concluded French Open. Williams has been the most destructive force on the WTA Tour this year as she simply crushed any challenge that has come her way. Aiming to win the sixth Wimbledon Title of her illustrious career, Williams’ chances this year have further become stronger with the exits of Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.
She possesses a powerful serve and backs it with some really hard hit ground strokes and they have helped her affirm her authority over most of the players on tour, her 43-2 win-loss record this year states how well she has done that. Her serves have been her greatest strength on grass and she hit an amazing 102 aces last year en route to her 5th title victory here. With the ability to overpower her opponents effortlessly, it is hard to predict a player who can take her out at this year’s Championships.
On the other hand, former semifinalist Krumm has redefined age and will surely inspire a lot others to continue tennis longer. The oldest lady to reach the Third Round at Wimbledon, Krumm is a former Top-5 and has been ranked as high as No.4 in the World. With unconventional yet effective strokes, Krumm takes the ball early and does not give much time to her opponent.
Having won 8 titles in her career, Krumm is ranked at No.84 in the World and would be looking to sustain her place amongst the Top-100 knowing her retirement age is around the corner.
This is their first meeting with Williams coming into this match as a crushing favorite.
