Bernard Tomic has become used to controversies surrounding him and this surely has distracted the Australian form playing the tennis everyone expects him to play. Tomic lost last week in the Opening Round of the Aegon Championships followed by a quarterfinal stint at the Aegon International. He squares off against the big serving American Sam Querrey in the Opening Round at Wimbledon.
The Australian started the year on a very promising note by winning the APIA International at home before losing in the Third Round of the Australian Open. With people believing that Tomic is back on track and one can expect him to play some fine tennis, disappointment started seeping in as after his quarterfinal stint at the Open 13 as Tomic failed to progress past the Second Round at any tournament he featured in.
With a 16-12 win-loss record this year, Tomic is presently ranked at No.59 in the World and has been ranked as high as No.27 on the ATP Charts. A big serve and solid game from the back of the court, Tomic has the ability to change the pace of the rallies especially with his forehands. A player with all the abilities to be a future Top-10, it is just the distractions Tomic needs to get rid off to play at the level everyone is used to seeing from him.
His opponent, Querrey has a very powerful and effective serve and he makes the most of it. He also possesses a good forehand and relies heavily on these two things to win a match. With his best performance at the All England Club being a Fourth Round in 2010, Querrey would be gunning to justify his seeding this year. Presently ranked at No.19 on the ATP Charts, Querrey is yet to break into the Top-15 of the World and would be looking to do so by the end of this year.
The American, who comes into Wimbledon with an 18-13 win-loss record this year has won 7 ATP World Tour Titles in his career and would be looking to add more to his name.
Head to head: The pair’s only previous meeting came at last year’s Australian Open with Tomic winning that clash in four sets.
