In her second round match against Melinda Czink, Serena Williams answered her critics by doing what she does best, destroying opponents. The younger Williams in known to get stronger and better with every passing match, and usually plays her best tennis in the business end of a Major. With the kind of performance she put in her last match, one should expect more fire works as we move further.
Williams is the automatic favorite coming into most Grand Slams, but having seen her lose the opening round fixture at Roland Garros that too in such dramatic fashion makes one wonder, whether her time is up. It is due to this reason that this year’s champion seems to be the hardest to predict.
Serena Williams has become used to the favorite tag and almost any Grand Slam she decides to enter she is the favorite to win it. She once again comes into Wimbledon a favorite, but not the favorite. Following her defeat in the opening round at Roland Garros, experts seem to have written the American off, and believe that it marked the end of an era, an era that was dominated by the Williams sisters. Serena however, is known to be a fighter and one who can power through her opponents on days that she is focused.
Her win-loss record stands at 29-3 and she has won two titles this year one in Charleston and the other in Madrid.
Her opponent today, Jie Zheng isn’t just anybody. Zheng has 4 WTA titles to her name and has won a title this year too. Her year started off with a bang in Auckland as she won that title. She then did well to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open as well. At Indian Wells and in Miami, she reached the third round. She had a poor clay court season, but the Chinese likes the green grass and made it to the semis of a recently concluded event at Birmingham. Her win-loss record stands at 21-13 this year.
Their head to head record is a whitewash for Serena. Their last meeting came back in 2011, where Serena won in three tight sets.
TennisEarth picks an easy win for the 4 time Champion.
