Bidding for her second Wimbledon title, World No.1 and former champion Maria Sharapova faces a tricky challenge in the fourth-round in the form of spirited German Sabine Lisicki, who is currently ranked as World No. 15 in the WTA Rankings.
Sharapova, who completed her career Grand Slam last month by winning the French Open title, looking fresh and revitalized after that triumph and since then she has been enjoying superbly. With three titles already in her kitty this year, Sharapova has an impressive win-loss record of 38-5 this year. She has upgraded her level and her overall game and that shows in her results. With a good serve and some ferocious strokes, Sharapova has been good from the back and from the front - equally. She won her first ever Grand Slam here and with her new and improved game, she is a front runner for the title. She displayed some really inspiring tennis in her previous round, where she was hitting the ball very cleanly.
Sharapova’s opponent Lisicki has been on a redemption mode in the new season. The German has a decent 13-13 win-loss record for the season and she has won three career titles so far. In head-to-head Sharapova apparently leads with 3-0 against the German. Last time they met earlier this year in the same stage of the Aussie Open, where Sharapova topped the German in three sets. We can expect the same sort of result this time too.
