In an exciting fourth-round encounter here at Wimbledon, World No. 2 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus takes on former World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia to secure her berth in the last eight. Both contenders have been enjoying a decent form in this tournament and we can expect some tremendous tennis action on Monday, when they will be up against each other.
Currently ranked as World No. 2, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus started off the new season on a high note, winning the first four tournaments she played, including the Australian Open. But, in the next four tournaments, she reached the finals of two of them and lost both. Her shocking loss in the fourth round of Roland Garros led her to surrender the World No.1 ranking to Maria Sharapova. Her win-loss record stands at an astounding 39-4 this year and she would be aiming to reclaim her No.1 ranking soon. Azarenka has not lost a set to come this far in this tournament.
Ivanovic had a poor start to the year she was knocked out in the second round at Brisbane and then in the first round at Sydney. After that she managed a fourth round finish at the Australian Open. In February, a much improved Ivanovic reached the quarterfinal of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships where she lost to Caroline Wozniacki. She continued to improve and reached the semifinals at Indian Wells. Against Sharapova in the semis she pulled out with a hip injury. In her first event on clay this year, Ivanovic reached the third round at Madrid where she met the then World No.1 Victoria Azarenka, in that match Ivanovic fought hard but was unable to beat the Belarusian. Then in Rome, she lost to eventual champion Maria Shaparpova in the pre-quarters stage. The Serbian defied the strong challenge of Julia Goerges in the last round here at Wimbledon, as she rallied from a set down to beat the German in three sets.
In head-to-head, both contenders are evenly placed at 2-2 against each other. Considering the present state of affairs, both look at par with each other and we can expect some scintillating tennis action on Monday, when these two defiant WTA contenders will be up against each other.
