The 2010 Championships are no different from the previous championships as far as the withdrawals are concerned. There have been a number of withdrawals this year from both men's and women's side. The major reason behind the issue is questions about the physical fitness of the professionals on tour. The players have been slugging it out on tour continously with a busy schedule of 11 months, out of which the months of May, June and July are the busiest. The Clay season preceeds the grass season which is considered to be one of the most strenuous seasons and demands a lot from the professionals on tour.
The most noted players that have wthdrawn from Wimbledon are Ivo Karlovic, Radek Stepanek, David Nalbadian, Mario Ancic, Richard Gaesquet, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina. Elena Dementieva withdrew from Wimbledon after she was injured while playing the French Open semifinal against eventual champion Francesca Schiavone. Dementieva tore her calf muscle and was in miserable pain as she retired from the match as she could not take the agony for long.
Ivo Karlovic, the tallest man on court towering the rest at a height of 6 foot and 10 inches has been suffering with a right foot injury for a long time now. Also known for his huge serve, the big-Croatian has been suffering from Achilles’ tendon injury too which caused him to miss the French Open. He was seeded as high as 25 in the tournament when he broke the news about being unable to attend the Championships. Karlovic had served a total of 158 aces last year before he was defeated by Federer in the Quarter-Finals.
Another player to announce his withdrawal is David Nalbandian who is yet to recover from a hip injury. The Argentine suggested that he would prefer playing the Davis Cup instead of Wimbledon as he is not feeling that he is one hundred percent for the grass endeavour. The Czech star Radek Stepanek had an unfortunate incident during a pratice session and he injured his knee. “I had cleared all tests on Monday morning without a single problem and had planned to fly out on Tuesday for Wimbledon preparations. I just wanted to try out a racket and this happened,” said Stepanek as he decided to cancel his plans for Wimbledon.
Other withdrawals include Richard Gasquet who is suffering from a knee injury and Mario Ancic who seems to be struggling with illness and a bad back. The withdrawal has resulted in the improvements of certain seedings as a result of which French underdog Julien Benneteau has got a seed in the tournament.
