Venus Williams came into the final with a 2-3 head-to-head against Flavia Pennetta, but won her match as if it was just another opening round match with an emphatic performance to win 6-1, 6-2 in just 62 minutes to win her first Abierto Mexicano Telcel trophy, presented by HSBC.
This is Venus' second consecutive title after her title triumph in Dubai last week at a premier event. Venus is also currently the only active player to have won over 40 career titles.
Pennetta, on the other hand has only improved in match wins here in Acapulco, with the final win-loss now 2-4, having won the titles here in 2205 and 2008, and a final finish in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009.
In the men's final second seed Frenchman Gael Monfils was completely humbled by a performance filled with power and precision, when clay-court marvel Nicolas Almagro registered a methodical 6-4, 6-4 win to claim another title here in Acapulco. In a match that lasted 76 minutes, Almagro converted 3 of 8 break point opportunites, sufficient to fetch him the trophy.
The successful title defense came with a sweet entrance in top 20 for the Spaniard who entered the event as the World Number 21.
