Wawrinka opened the match on a tight note and failed to grab a break to eventually see the set go into a tie break which he won by 11 points to 9. Due to the high level of competition, the second set also went into the tiebreak and favoured the American this time. The next two sets were split by each player by the virtue of an elusive break in the third and fourth set.
The decider brought a lot of opportunities for both players and Wawrinka took the matters into his own hands in the last game by breaking Querrey's serve to complete the marathon 7-6(9), 6-7(5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win in four hours and 28 minutes of play.
