Daniela Hantuchova has always been a tough nut to crack on the WTA Tour and proved that absolutely right when she crushed the likes of Laura Robson and Francesca Schiavone and the then 16 year old Donna Vekic to claim her first trophy on the original surface of the sport in Birmingham. Before that, the Poprad native was struggling to win even back-to-back matches on the tour, but surprised everyone with her amazing run in that tournament.
However as a lot of people were expecting her to make a deep run at the All England Club, she failed to deliver the goods at SW19 as she was dismantled in straight sets by the in-form Czech Klara Zakopalova. Nonetheless, the short grass leg is now over and she would be expecting to shrug-off the disappointment of losing her opener at the ‘Big W’.
But, she has a tough match up against yet another player who wasn’t getting her radar right and in fact had not won back-to-back matches for six months until she changed that in Eastbourne where she made it through to the semifinals taking out the likes of 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and World No.12 Maria Kirilenko before losing to Elena Vesnina in the semifinals. Still, she could not take that form to Wimbledon as she bowed out of The Championships in round 1. Nonetheless, she will be hoping that she will be able to stop yet another slump by doing well on the hard-courts of America.
The two women have battled each other 5 times before in the past and so far Hantuchova has maintained a clean-sheet against Wickmayer. And the last time they met on the hard-courts of Bali in 2010, Daniela won that duel 6-4, 7-6 in just a shade under two hours. Expect this one to have a similar outcome as the Belgian is just not at all performing well.
Pick: Hantuchova in two!
