Playing her fourth tournament of the year, Australian Open Finalist Na Li squares off against Varvara Lepchenko in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open. The Chinese was out of action due to an ankle injury and would be hoping to get some good match practice going deep into this tournament.
Li started her 2013 season on a very positive note, winning her 7th WTA Title in Shenzen. Li’s run in Australia was an impressive one, losing in the semis of the Apia International and following it with a final stint at the Grand Slam of the Asia Pacific. But an ankle injury played spoilt sport for the Chinese, who is presently ranked at No.5 in the World.
With the caliber to beat anyone on her day, Li’s forehand is probably the best on tour and once it finds the range, it is hard to stop. Coming into this tournament with a 14-2 win-loss record, Li would be a front runner for the title provided her ankle supports her.
On the other hand, Lepchenko is yet to win a title on the WTA Tour and has a win-loss record of 3-6 coming into this event. She has proved that she possesses the ability to beat the best after defeating Sara Errani this year during their Fed Cup Match. But at WTA events, the American has struggled to find win matches and would be looking to cause an upset here.
The two have not faced each other and it seems like Li comes into this match as a favorite.
