Bulgarian No. 1 Tsvetana Pironkova advanced into the second round of the Grand Prix SAR Open held in Morocco with a straight sets win over Karolina Pliskova. The 25-year-old broke Pliskova twice in each set to achieve a 7-5, 6-1 win over her Czech rival in the opening round of the WTA clay-court event.
Pironkova who is yet to win a WTA title in her career will now lock horns with Lourdes Dominguez Lino for a spot in the third-round of the $235,000 tournament. Pironkova has been in a poor form of lately but her first round win at Marrakech helped her to break a 8-match losing streak, the last seven of which were in the first round itself.
Pironkova whose season record is 2-8 started the season with a back-to-back win at the Moorilla Hobart International that took her to the quarterfinal of the pre-Australian Open tournament. Prior to the Morocco event, Pironkova played at an indoor clay court event at Katowice, Miami and Indian Wells where the world no. 53 never made beyond the opening round.
However, for the next round encounter against Dominguez Lino, the Bulgarian beauty will be hoping to be able to repeat her winning performance so as to get a spot in the third round. Pironkova is 1-1 in head-to-head record with the Spaniard veteran but the only time the Bulgarian beat the world no. 56 was way back in 2003 in Sofia. The other time they played was in Miami in 2011 where Dominguez overcame her younger opponent in three sets.
Nevertheless, Dominguez who defeated Japanese Misaki Doi in her opening round of the ongoing 13th edition of the Morocco event will have the psychological edge and the experience on her side when she meets the 2010 Wimbledon semi-finalist for the third time in her professional career.
