Carrying the hopes of Canadian fans, World No. 62 Eugenie Bouchard will take on the World No. 1 Serena Williams of USA today in a second-round match-up of the 2013 Cincinnati WTA Premier Event. Undoubtedly, Serena is crushing favorite in this encounter, but the rising Canadian has shown a lot of confidence and improvement in her game of late and she could give her best shot against the American hurricane.
Gunning for her ninth title of the season, World No. 1 Serena Williams will start off her 2013 Cincinnati WTA Premier Event campaign today against the top Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. Serena has been in a red-hot form at the moment and she is coming off title victory at Rogers Cup last week. If Milos Raonic has infused new life in the Canadian tennis from men’s side, Eugenie Bouchard has also looked promising but she needs to perform consistently to live up to the ever-soaring expectations of her fans.
Serena looked in complete control during her Roger Cup final last week, as she comprehensively topped the Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-2 6-0 to add 54th career title to her treasure-trove. Interestingly, Serena is bidding for her maiden Western & Southern Open tournament title this week and the way she has performed of late, it seems that she is five victories away from getting her hands over the coveted trophy. The thirty one year old American has a stellar 56-3 win-loss record for the season.
Eugenie Bouchard qualified to the main draw after winning two matches and then beat Puerto Rican Monica Puig, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday to set up this clash with Serena. The nineteen year old Canadian has a decent 22-17 win-loss record for the season.
This will be a first meeting between these two and it would be interesting to see, how the young Canadian would fare against the surging Serena, who would be looking forward to finish off this contest quickly to save energy for the next grueling rounds.
