Victoria Azarenka booked her place in the semi-finals of the London Olympics after overcoming some sloppy tennis along with a spirited performance by her German opponent Angelique Kerber. Azarenka overcame Kerber 6-4, 7-5 in 1 hour 46 minutes in a match that saw both players touch highs and lows.
Azarenka won the first set in 48 minutes after breaking the Kerber twice, once in the decisive tenth game of the set. With 3 aces and amazing 14 winners, Azarenka kept troubling Kerber on her serve and and her resistance paid off with the two vital breaks. Though Kerber fought back by breaking Azarenka once, the Belarusian was too strong for the German, who paid the price for not serving well.
The second set was closer than the first one, with breaks coming at constant intervals in a set that lasted for over an hour. Kerber broke the Azarenka serve thrice, but got broken four times to let the set and the match go out of hand. Azarenka kept troubling Kerber on her serve and was rewarded with a break in the eighth game. She held a couple of match points but the net was not on her side as Kerber saved both the match points with the help of the net.
Azarenka got the decisive break in the twelfth game of the second set that also saw the match ending with Azarenka raising her hands in triumph.
