Verdasco started the match on a bright note and broke Nalbandian's serve twice after a couple of long service holds by the Argentine to wrap up the set 6-2. The second set saw a role reversal of sorts when Verdasco lost control of his game momentarily and gave away two service games to let Nalbandian come back into the match.
The third set once again saw a shift in momentum when Verdasco broke Nalbandian's serve in the eighth game to race to a formidable two sets to one lead. The fourth set brought two more breaks of serve in the Spaniard's favour after which he completed the 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in almost three hours of play.
Verdasco now meets compatriot David Ferrer, who battled past fellow countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver with a 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2 scoreline to move ahead in the draw.
