Second seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain suffered a early exit from the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships as he was handed a 7-6 (4) 6-3 defeat by Jeremy Chardy of France on Tuesday.
Verdasco who won the SAP Open last week defeating Andy Roddick in the final, said “With just one day in between matches and in different conditions, and not being able to practice on the stadium court before the match, it was difficult. But he played a great match. He served really good.”
Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of Czeck Republic was impressive in his 6-2 6-1 win against American qualifier Ryan Sweeting.
Croatia's Ivo Karlovic fired 32 aces to down German Benjamin Becker 7-6(6) 7-6(4) and Kazakhstan's Evgeny Korolev knocked out German Philipp Kohlschreiber7-5 7-5.
In the women's side of the draw, second seeded Melanie Oudin of America cruised past compatriot Alexa Glatch 6-2 6-2.
Croat Karolina Sprem stunned fourth seeded Czech Lucie Hradecka 6-4 6-4, and eight seeded Elena Baltacha of Britain downed Renata Voracova 7-5 6-1.
