Fernando Verdasco of Spain scored his first win against second seeded and 2011 finalist Rafael Nadal in their 14th career meeting and posted a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory in three sets to book his spot in the quarter-finals of 2012 Madrid Open.
Both players exchanged a single break in the start of the first set. Verdasco upped his level of play and secured second break in the set at 4-2. He kept the break till the end to close the set 6-3 in his favour.
No breaks were exchanged in the second set till 3-1 where-in Nadal struck first. Verdasco broke back in the seventh game but failed to held his serve in the next game. After that, Nadal successfully served out for the set and won it 6-3 to force a third set in the match.

Nadal raised the level of his play in the third set and broke Verdasco two time for 4-1 lead. Verdasco broke Nadal at 4-2 but got himself broken in next game. Nadal was asked to serve out for the match at 5-2 scoreline but nor did he failed to serve out for the set, he lost next five games in a row to gift a unexpected win to Verdasco.
Verdasco will next face sixth seeded Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, who eased past Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-1, 6-1 earlier in the day.

very uncharacteristic loss for Nadal here. not sure what happened to him but i hope it's not a foregleam of what is going to happen next at the French Open. i still have high hopes he will win the French Open.
