The final of the 2009 US Open, the year's last Grand Slam, is path-breaking in many ways. It is the first time that a wild-card entrant has earned herself a chance to play the championship match, this is the first time a Danish woman has reached the final of the Grand Slam event and last but not the least, this is the first time in the history of women's tennis that one of the finalist came through with a win that saw an end with an anti-climax point penalty against her opponent.
If all these facts are not enough, then here is the supreme one to top it all up. 2005 champion Kim Clijsters is trying to become the first Mom since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980 Wimbledon to win a Grand Slam Championship.
Let's take a closer look at the stakes both the women have at this year's title-
Caroline Wozniacki (9) vs. Kim Clijsters
Head-to-Head
First Meeting
Kim Clijsters made a superb comeback on the WTA tour and yesterday achieved a feat which is considered almost insurmountable, beating both Williamses in the same tournament. Although this is not the first time she had done so having beaten the sisters to clinch the Sony Ericsson Championships in 2002 as well. However, to be able to come back from a long hiatus and win at such a level is simply exceptional and a feast to watch for the fans world over.
Clijsters strongest ally going into the final is her experience that goes back to 2005 when she listed the trophy beating the likes of Venus, Sharapova and Pierce. In fact, this year's championship saw a better, much-improved Belgian as she improvised majorly on her backhand and second serve which was a bit of a concern, the testimony of which are a series of tough service games which she won after being double, sometimes triple break points down.
Wozniacki, on the other hand, who has been under-estimated in the past even after having a stellar performance this season including wins in Ponte Vedra Beach, Eastbourne and New Haven. Wozniacki is also the tour leader in te
rms of most number of wins in 2009.
Wozniacki can not be ruled out from the contendorship because of her ability to outplay opponents in lengthy rallies by extracting errors. This is one aspect of her game that has fetched her wins over players like Kuznetsova, Oudin and Wickmayer. Although, to her dismay, Clijsters has an upper hand in this department as she has been able to outrun opponents in patience-testing rallies.
Our Pick - Taking into consideration the experience that the Belgian possesses, it is more likely that she will win her second slam at the very start of the second innings of her stellar career.
