After losing in the Finals of the New Haven Open, Czech Petra Kvitova takes on Japanese Misaki Doi in the Opening Round of the US Open. Kvitova comes into this match as the Eighth Seed and a favorite to reach the business end of this Grand Slam.
One of the cleanest and hardest strikers of the ball, Kvitova is currently ranked at No.10 in the World and comes into this tournament after an impressive finals run at the New Haven Open last week. After a really disappointing start to her 2013 campaign, the Czech finally caught pace with quarterfinals stints at the Open GDF SUEZ and the Qatar Ladies Open. She displayed some fantastic tennis in Dubai where she went on to win her 10th WTA Tour Title, hinting that she is finally playing the tennis we are used to seeing from her.
She also managed reaching the finals of the BNP Paribas Katowice Open but failed to impress during the European clay court season. Her powerful serve is usually backed by some very heavy ground strokes from the back, making things tougher for her opponent on the faster surfaces as the Czech can easily overpower her opponents. With a 39-19 win-loss record this year, the Czech has not performed well here and has not reached the Quarterfinals of this event even once but now that she is seeded higher than her ranking, she would be gunning to reach the business end here.
On the opposite side of the net, 22 year old Doi is still new on tour and comes into this match with a 18-24 win-loss record in the 2013 highlighted by her recent Semifinal stint at the Suzhou Ladies Open. Ranked as high as No.82 in the World, the Japanese has won 3 ITF Titles in her career as she looks to accumulate as much experience as she can from this match against Kvitova.
Head to head: The pair has met once before and that too this year in Poland where the Czech emerged victorious in straight sets.
