Third seeded and 2006 champion Maria Sharapova of Russia outplayed Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino with 6-0, 6-1 scoreline in the second round match of the US Open 2012 Tennis Championships.

Sharapova needed only 21 minutes to win the first set as she broke her opponent all three times in the set and placed 16 winners in the middle. She kept 69% of first serves in and arrowed 4 aces.

In the second set, the Spaniard was able to hold her serve for the first time but failed to prove any match for the Russian and went down in straight sets.

In major upset of the day, three time US Open champion Kim Clijsters suffered a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) loss against teenager Laura Robson of Britain.

''It's the place that has inspired me so much to do well and to do great things. It's hard to explain sometimes why,'' Clijsters said ''This completely feels like the perfect place to retire.I just wish it wasn't today.''
