Sharapova opened the match on a flying note as she reeled off five games in a row after 1-1 scoreline to take the first set 6-1 in her favour. She broke Petrova twice in the set, placed 8 winners and benefited from 9 unforced errors made by Petrova in the set.

Petrova bounced back strongly in the second set as she raced to 4-0 lead in the set but Sharapova refused to go down easily and upped the level of her play to squre the scores at 4-4 in the set. However, Sharapova failed to hold her serve while serving to stay in the set and allowed Petrova to level the match scores at set apiece.

Petrova got a early break in the second game of the third set before rain forced the suspension of play. After rain delay, Sharapova broke Petrova immediately to bring the things back on serve.

Sharapova secured another break of serve at 4-3 and kept it till the end to register the victory in three sets.

Sharapova next faces Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, who ousted Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time in her career.
