Roberta Vinci locks horns with fellow countrywoman Sara Errani for a place in the last 4 of the US Open. The two by reaching the quarter-finals have created history as the winner will become the FIRST ITALIAN women to reach the semi-finals at the US Open in the Open Era.
Vinci, comes into the tournament ranked at No.19 on the WTA charts and has a healthy win-loss record of 38-22 this year. With 1 title behind her back in 2012, Vinci has displayed some great form coming into this match, including a victory over World No.2 Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. What has worked in her favor is her sharp slice that keeps very low. She follows this slice with some fine volleys, showing she has a good overall game. Facing Errani, Vinci would fancy her chances as these opportunities don’t come along easily.
Errani, on the other hand, stole the limelight and became a regular face in the circuit after reaching the
finals of the French Open falling short to Maria Sharapova. She is one player whose game is very hard to adjust and we saw that in her previous round victory over Angelique Kerber. She has already won 4 titles this year and has compiled a win-loss record of 51-17. She is ranked at No.10 in the World and would want to book a place in the year ending championships by reaching the Top-8.
The two have faced each other 5 times with Errani holding a slender lead of 3-2. On hard courts though, Vinci leads her higher ranked opponent 2-1. Who will get her name in the record books today? Stay tuned to find out!
