Former US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt locks horns with Gilles Muller in the second round of the last Grand Slam of the year. Hewitt’s ranking has dropped drastically as he sees himself outside the Top-100 and was awarded a wild card and Hewitt would want to justify this opportunity.
Presently ranked at 125 in the World, Hewitt started the year positively; reaching the Round of 16 at the Australian Open but has failed to deliver the goods since. Injury also played a spoil sport for the Aussie, who returned directly to Roland Garros after the Australian Open. He featured in the finals of the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships recently, stating he still has that ‘never say die’ attitude running in his blood. With a win-loss record of 12-8, Hewitt would be eying to crack the Top-100 soon and probably even a Top-50 in the near future.
On the other side of the net, Muller is a former US Open Junior champion and has a big serve. Though he lacks a bit of consistency in his game but on his day, he can give the best a tough time. He came back from two sets to love down in the first round to upset Mikhail Youzhny. With a win-loss record of 17-17 in 2012, Muller featured in the finals of the Atlanta Open and would be hoping to get some matches under his belt. He is presently ranked at 53 in the world and would be aiming to climb up the ranks soon.
The two are veterans on tour and have played once that too eight years ago. Hewitt won that encounter in straight sets. This match is very well poised and it is tough to predict a winner.
