Defending champion and second seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia cruised past Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-1 6-0 6-1 in the first round of the 2012 U.S. Open Tennis Championships at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.
Match Cast: Djokovic vs Lorenzi
Djokovic lost the first game of the match but then reeled off 18 of the next 19 games to close the match in just 73 minutes. The Serbian won 79 of 114 points, fired seven aces and placed 32 winners in the middle.
"Obviously, I tried to analyze my game, and my game was great from the start to the end," said Djokovic. "You know, it's also important for me to try to be as economical with the time I spend on the court as possible, but obviously not underestimating any opponent. I played really focused, tried to get to the net also. It was great all in all."
In other match of the day, fifth seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ousted Slovakian qualifier Karol Beck 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
"I think I played good tennis the first two sets, and after that I lost a bit concentration at the beginning of the third set," said Tsonga. "Then I came back, and, you know, I did some effort to come back. It was not easy today because the weather was hot. I'm happy to go through this round really quickly"
Tsonga next faces another Slovak Martin Klizan, who defeated Colombia’s Alejandro Falla 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 earlier in the day.
