Young qualifier from USA, Vania King continued her winning streak at the inaugural Monterrey Open with an upset win over fifth seed Agnes Szavay 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The American had to win three tough matches in the qualifying rounds, just to make it to the main draw, and here she is regaling the quarterfinal line up. She next faces tournament's second seed Marion Bartoli, who edged past wild card entrant Magdalena Rybarikova 6-4, 6-0 in just 66 minutes.
The other two spots of the last eight were decided when sixth seed Czech star Iveta Benesova defeated Roberta Vinci 7-6(4), 6-2 and Barbora Zahlavova Strycov created a huge stir by eliminating third seed Flavia Pennetta in three tough sets. The 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-4 victory came after almost two and a half hours of struggle. Pennetta was a losing finalist at last week's Abierto Mexicano Telcel, presented by HSBC, where Wimbledon champion Venus Williams emerged victorious.
