French favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did just what the doctor ordered, when he over came Stanislas Wawrinka in just over four hours in yet another momentus match which swung like a pendulum. Tht World No.5 was two sets up before he was pegged back and the Swiss came back to level it at two sets all.
The drama continued as bad light then stopped play yesterday, with Tsonga 4-2 up in the decisive set. Wawrinka came back firing today, and levelled the match after breaking Tsonga in the very first game to level scores at 4 apiece. It was then that the Frenchman turned it on to break Wawrinka in the tenth game to take the match.
In the first set, we were on serve till the ninth game. The set saw a lot more action that first line suggests, Tsonga could have broken in the very first game, but as is his record, he doesnt like to do things the easy way. The first set saw Tsonga hitting 13 winners and having a high first serve percentage of 75.
The second set that started off evenly slowly started to turn the Frenchman's way, who's serving looked immaculate. In the seventh game, Wawrinka looked a bit jaded and let Tsonga take advantage of it, as he broke the Swiss's serve.Tsonga then consolidated in the next game by holding on to love. In his next service game though, Tsonga was broken, and appeared brittle once again, his temperament into question once again, scored tied at 5-5. Wawrinka then easily held on to his serve forcing Tsonga to hold to stay in the set. Tsonga did first go down a three set points but then recovered to win the game and force the set into a tie break. Tsonga smashed 12 winners and comitted only 14 unforced errors. The stats and the set was very even, but Tsonga was strong willed for a change and took the set because he won all the vital points.
Tsonga of the old appeared to be back as the Frenchman cracked once more, making some unnecessary errors along the way to losing the set. All the things that Tsonga did right in the last two sets, he did wrong this time as the Swiss is the one making ll the improvement in his game, winning all the important points. We were on serve till the 7th game when the Frenchman started crumbling. We're looking at a five setter, if Tsonga doesn't recover quickly.
Wawrinka won another set. A very similar pattern to last years edition of the French Open appeared as the Swiss out of no where fought back and is now level with the Frenchman. Tsonga looked visibly shocked and really appeared a bit jaded in the set. The Frenchman looked like he was reliving the agony of his defeat last of last year. Wawrinka hit 11 winners to Tsonga's 7. Tsonga also served 2 double faults in the set.
The last set was another topsy-tury affair that started off with Tsonga breaking early. Rain then stopped play, when Tsonga was cruising. Wawrinka came back firing today, but was unable to sustain as the Frenchman broke in the tenth game to take the match 4 - 6, 6 - 7, 6 - 3, 6 - 3, 4 - 6
