On his 30th birthday Andy Roddick broke a few hearts as he announced that this US Open will be his last tournament. It was a sad day, as Roddick wasn't just a extraordinary player but also a character that the game shall remember for years and years to come.
Roddick served American tennis for 12 years, and was by far the most consistent American on tour. He won 31 titles, and lord knows he would have won many more had it not been for the great Roger Federer.
His big booming serve will be missed, but what will be missed more is his mere presence on the tennis circuit. Most would say that he underachieved, but today is not the day to look at his short-comings, but to look back at the sublime memories he leaves us with.
TennisEarth pays a tribute to this under-appreciated American.

But he did famously say that he "threw the kitchen sink at Roger, but he threw the bath back".

Should've won at least one of those Wimbledons.

I saw him in Wimbledon about 5-6 years ago. Hr'll be missed. Great for the sport. Shame he picked a difficult era!

I saw him play this year in Eastbourne, and I am so pleased now that I got to see him one last time.
