Tommy Haas lifted his second Gerry Weber Open title after humbling Roger Federer in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-4 in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Haas played remarkably well today and was rewarded with the title and also a third win over his Swiss counterpart.
Haas won the first set from nowhere after trailing 1-3 in the set. The set that lasted for 50 minutes had its share of drama, with the set going from one way to the other. Once Haas got the break in the fifth game, he was a different player all together. With 3 aces and some glorious winners, Haas kept the home crowd going after taking the first set in a tie break.
The second set was also a very close one, with both players holding with ease in the beginning, before getting tight on serve in the latter stages of the set. With Haas doing the chase work in the second set, it was the all important ninth game he targeted as he stepped up his game and broke the Federer serve to serve out the match in style.
Both players hug at the net as Federer congratulated the Champion and let Haas have his share of the limelight.
