Two tie breaks were required to adjudge the winner of the semi-final clash between Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro. But, it was the Czech who prevailed in the 2 hour 20 minute marathon match to seal a berth in the finals of the Mutua Madrid Open.
The first set went to the Czech as he won the first set in an hour and 11 minutes. Some fascinating tennis by both the players was being seen by the crowd as Berdych fought back from a break down to win the set after a very close tie breaker. Berdych served well and returned even better to close the set with a thundering forehand inside out winner.
With second set also evenly poised, it was Berdych who took the early break and saw it vanish with Del Potro fighting back to break and get the match on level terms. The second set tie break was also a close encounter with Berdych reigning supreme after an overhead winner.
When we look at the stats, we see that Berdych was the more aggressive one, taking the initiative by hitting 41 winners and winning 75% if the net points. Both players shared 2 breaks each as that nullified the effect if the breaks.
Berdych next awaits the winner of Roger Federer and Janko Tipsarevic.
