Sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych lost in straight sets 4-6 4-6 to Steve Darcis of Belgium on Saturday in the first round of Olympic play at Wimbledon. The Belgian Darcis played some superb groundstrokes and did not allow Berdych to settle down at any juncture of the match.
On the other hand, American John Isner made a tremendous Olympic debut on Saturday at Wimbledon, as he beat experienced campaigner Olivier Rochus of Belgium in straight sets 7-6 (1), 6-4.
The lanky American John Isner fired 24 aces and surged through with the match.
In women’s competitions, former World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic also made a solid start to her Olympics medal campaign, as she beat Christina McHale of the United States, 6-4, 7-5, on Saturday in the first round at Wimbledon.
American tennis powerhouse Serena Williams also won her 1st round match at Olympics. Williams knocked out former World No. 1 No. 1 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-1 to make a terrific start to her campaign.
