In 2012, Rafael Nadal came into the tournament with the prospect of losing his winning streak here to the advancing Serbian Novak Djokovic.
The 2012 Monte Carlo Masters posed the biggest threat yet to Nadal's dominance not only in Monte Carlo, but France as a whole. Nadal came into the tournament as World No.2 and on the back of seven final defeats in a row to Novak Djokovic. He had also lost Roger Federer in the Miami Masters only a few weeks back.
Nadal nevertheless, was nonchalant. He continued to concentrate on his game rather than worrying about others. His focus paid rich dividends as he reached the finals unperturbed without dropping a single set. The final was again between the two best players in the world. Against Djokovic in the Australian Open final Nadal had given it his all and yet fallen short, uncertainty was definitely in the air as two locked horns. The uncertainty did however quickly evaporate, as Nadal capped a brilliant display in two sets. Nadal won his eighth consecutive Monte Carlo title by defeating Djokovic 6-3,6-1.
