In 2009, Nadal entered the French Open for the first time as World No.1. He had gained that status when he defeated Federer in Wimbledon the previous year. He came into the tournament as the man to beat.
Nadal started the tournament in what had now become regular displays. He saw off Marcos Daniel then Teymuraz Gabashvili and the Leyton Hewitt all in three sets. In the fourth-round Nadal met the mercurial Robin Soderling. Soderling was having one of his brilliant days and absolutely outplayed Nadal to beat him in four sets, Nadal lost 2-6, 7-6, 4-6, 6-7. This defeat sent shock waves through the tennis locker rooms as it was his first ever defeat at Roland Garros.
