World No.5 and former Roland Garros champion Na Li from China begins her preparations for the second Grand Slam of the year at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. The Chinese faces Croat Mirjana Lucic for a place in the last 8 of this event. Both players are 31 years old and have a difference of almost 100 spots in their rankings.
Li made a terrific start to her 2013 campaign as she lifted her seventh WTA Tour Title in Shenzhen and followed it with a semifinal run in Sydney and then a finals stint at the Australian Open. The Chinese was looking great till an ankle injury halted her progress. Li was forced to withdraw from the Doha and Dubai tournaments due to an ankle injury. She also withdrew from Indian Wells with same injury, raising a lot of doubts over her return.
But a strong showing at the Sony Open proved that she continued where she left from, continuously posing a threat to the Top-3. The Chinese has one of the most lethal forehands on tour and once it starts finding its range, not many players can do much about it. A strong contender at any tournament she features in, Li is yet to break through the Top-3 club and would be looking to crack it by the end of this season.
On the other hand, Lucic comes into this match with a 7-9 win-loss record this year and has won 2 WTA Tour Titles in her career. A former Australian Open doubles champion, the Croat overcame Elena Vesnina in straight sets, proving that she has the ability to challenge some high quality players.
This is the first time the two are facing each other with Li coming in as a heavy favorite.
