Stosur wins tennis player of the year award
Samantha Stosur of Australia has won the best tennis player of the year award for a third consecutive year.

Samantha Stosur of Australia has been conferred Australia’s most outstanding player of the year for a third consecutive year at the Australian Tennis Awards in Melbourne on Monday.

28-year old Stosur defeated former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, Australia’s top-ranked male player Marinko Matosevic, and 2011 French Open mixed doubles champion Casey Dellacqua to claim the prestigious Newcombe Medal.

Currently ranked number nine, Stosur, at the gala event said “Receiving the Newcombe Medal for a third year in a row is an amazing honour.”

Even though the former US Open champion failed to secure a title in the 2012 season, she did reached the final at Doha and Moscow and remains the first Aussie woman since Wendy Turnbull to finish in the top 10 in WTA standings three years running.

The Newcombe Medal is a prestigious award that recognizes people’s achievements and contributions among Australia’s tennis community.
