In a battle between tour veterans, Australian Samantha Stosur emerged victorious to win her first Sony Ericsson WTA Singles title of the career at the 2009 HP Open, being played here in Osaka, Japan.
Tournament's third seed Stosur needed just 68 minutes to register a 7-5, 6-1 win over the fourth seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone to win the maiden title of her career.
"I played very well in the first set and barely made a mistake - I was still playing well in the second and nearly led 4-1 but she got back into the match," Stosur said. "I just told myself not to panic, keep doing the same things as I did in the first set and stay positive. I tried to do what I wanted to do and not let anything frustrate me. Obviously I'm pleased to bring it back and close it out."
Interestingly, Stosur had been in five singles finals but could not find the title mirth on any of those occasions. A celebrated doubles superstar, Stosur has 22 doubles titles and a No.1 doubles Ranking to her resume, but today's victory put an end to the singles final jinx.
In the doubles final, top seeds Chuang Chia-Jung and Lisa Raymond beat the unseeded pair of Chanelle Scheepers and Abigail Spears 6-2, 6-4 to collect the winner's trophy.
