Floridian Sloane Stephens who had failed to back up her stellar results of last year so far in 2014 looked determined to make amends to her play tonight against the 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic as she remained calm and focused especially in that second set when she was just a point away from going down a double break of serve.
At the end of the day that proved to be the turning point of the contest as subsequently the Serb lost her serve and the lead and with that the match as well in an hour and 43 minutes. And, the stats confirmed that Stephens had played much more solidly in the clash as she smacked 17 winners and made 7 fewer unforced errors than Ivanovic – 34 to her challenger’s 41 that gave her a memorable 7-6, 6-4 win over a player who had been in great touch to this point of the season.
In a seesaw affair between the two players, it was Stephens who ultimately took the opening set in exactly an hour in a tiebreaker. The American was quick off the blocks as she had taken a 4-2 lead with an early break of serve, but the Serbian’s beauty was determined to make a comeback into the contest.
And, she did just that as she broke back in the 8th and then again in the 10th to keep the scores on an even keel at 5 all. Eventually, the set went to a tiebreaker where it turned out to be a Sloane show as she came up with a few sensational forehand winners to seal the deal in her favor.
The second set ran almost identical to the first set as like the opening set one player had grabbed a 4-2 lead. The difference was that it was Stephens who had the advantage in set No.1 and in the second it was Ivanovic who had the lead.
In the next game Ivanovic had three chances for a double break of serve, but couldn’t cash on them and in the end Stephens battled her way out of that tricky situation. At 40-15 Ivanovic looked in absolute control of her serve in game No.8, but then two uncharacteristic unforced errors from her racket gave Stephens an opportunity at deuce.
And, Sloane did get the break back as she manufactured a peach of a forehand volley at the net and then came up with an off forehand winner. Thereafter, she wasted little time in ramming home the advantage as she broke the Ivanovic serve yet again in the 10th game to attain what was an impressive win for her on the day.
