Third-seeded Swiss and former runner-up Stanislas Wawrinka made an unceremonious second-round exit at the Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad after losing to World No.172 Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6(3), 7-6(8) in just over two hours.
Mathieu is on a comeback spree after his injury and will now play Ernests Gulbis, who advanced to the quarter-final with a three set marathon 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over Benoit Paire of France in two hours and 10 minutes.
Feliciano Lopez defeated Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-4. He hit 12 aces and converted four of his five break point opportunities for victory in just under 2 hours. Colombian Santiago Giraldo steamrolled Swiss wild card Henri Laaksonen with a 6-2, 6-2 victory as he saved all break points on serve.
