The Spanish team once again proved they are the best team in the world by re-claiming the oveted team title for the fourth time in nine years to become the 2009 Davis Cup champions.
Once again, Spanish Davis Cup Hero Fernando Verdasco bacame a part of the historic jump after the host nation's victory over the finalist Czech Republic when the World No.9 partnered with Feliciano Lopez to outclass the Czech team of Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych 7-6(7), 7-5, 6-1 in a match that lasted well over two hours and 45 minutes in play.
The Spanish duo clinched the opening set in a thrilling tie-break to give Spain a dream start in today's cruciual doubles rubber. The second set saw stiff competition from both teams when the elusive break came in the eleventh game in the Spanish duo's favour.
With a two sets to love lead, the Spaniards became extremely dominant in the match and grabbed one break after the other to complete the straight sets victory to give Spain a successul title defense.
Yesterday, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer's contrasting wins had boosted the host nation's chances of claiming the title. With the win, Spain became the first nation after Sweden in 1998 to successfully defend the biggest and the most coveted team title of the year.
