Spain vs. Switzerland
2-1
Defending champions Spain continued their magical performance in the doubles rubber yesterday and regstered a convincing four set win when the Spanish duo of Tommy Robredo and Davis Cup debutant Marcel Granollers struggled past Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka and Yves Allegro 7-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to give host nation Spain a formidable 2-1 lead. A win in either of the reverse singles will ensure Spain's place in the quarterfinals today. In the first reverse singles rubber today, Spanish hope David Ferrer takes on Swiss No.2 Stanislas Wawrinka.
Sweden vs. Argentina
1-2
There was a time when David Nalbandian was seen as the brightest hope for Argentina to land the Davis Cup silverware. But then injuries followed and equations changed. But what didn't change was the zest and the spirit to play for the nation, which made the Argentine superstar register a wonderful doubles win yesterday alongside Horacio Zeballos to beat the Swedish pair of Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt 6-2, 7-6(4), 7-6(5).
"After nine months out it’s not easy to play well but I think I did well today," said a elated Nalbandian. "Horacio played a great match too. He was incredible. The key was starting really well. I tried to push him all the way and he never let me down. We took every chance they gave us"
Serbia vs. USA
2-1
Led by Serbian powerhouse Novak Djokovic, the Croatian team raised to a formidable 2-0 lead over the USA on the opening day. However, things surprisingly changed in the doubles rubber, where despite having doubles specialist Nenad Zimonjic by their side, the Serbians could not seal the victory and gave way to the USA to push the tie to the deciding reverse singles day. In the absence of Mike Bryan, who suffered from food poisoning the night before, USA prepared the alternate pairing of Bob Bryan and John Isner.
"Mike got room service, chicken curry, and at 3am he started to get the shakes and started to vomit, we put him on an IV, he came out to the stadium and tried to practise but shook his head as he knew he couldn’t finish a match," Bob Bryan said. "I picked John because I wanted to back up that big serve and I think we combined pretty well."
Despite all odds, the Americans beat the Serbian duo of Nenad Zimonjic and Janko Tipsarevic 7-6(8), 5-7, 7-6(8), 6-3 to give their nation the first win in the tie.
