Sorana Cirstea beat American and last year's finalist Bethanie Mattek-Sands in a close three set encounter 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to move into the quarter-finals of the Hobart International. Second-seed Anabel Medina-Garrigues made short work of her Spanish counterpart Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets 6-2 7-6. Former Top 10 Anna Chakvetadze has breezed into the quarter-finals with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova.
Australian Sacha Jones is through to a second round to set up an encounter with sixth seed Shahar Peer. The former Kiwi, who only switched countries last week, beat German lucky loser Kristina Barrois 6-1, 6-4. Jones led 1-0 and was up 4-3 in the
second set before a rain delay of just under an hour. She had raced to a 5-0 lead in the first but had to fight harder in the second set after qualifying into the main draw.
Shahar Peer beat Czech Lucie Hradecka comfortably 6-3 6-1 in their first round clash. Peer beat the rain to win comfortably.
