Top seed and French Open finalist Robin Soderling opened his title defence with a hard fought win over compatriot and World No. 347 Andreas Vinciguerra at the 2010 Skistar Swedish Open.
Soderling held a match point in the second set but failed to convert it due to Vinciguerra's instant resistance, who levelled the match by one set a piece. However, the decider witnessed Soderling resume to his usual form after which he completed the 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2 win in one hour and 52 minutes of play.
Meanwhile, third seed David Ferrer improved his season claycourt record to 30-6 with a straight sets 6-3, 7-5 win over Italian Fabio Fognini. He was later joined by Italian Andreas Seppi, who registered a hard fought 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7) win in an all-Italian affair against Potito Starace.
In the day's last singles draw match, Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas took out Spaniard Pere Riba 6-4, 6-2 in 79 minutes of dominant tennis.
