Soderling stages superb comeback, joins Spaniards in Semis

Top seed and defending champion Robin Soderling staged on of the finest comebacks of his career and defeated Italian Andreas Seppi to enter the semifinals of the 2010 Skistar Swedish Open, being played here in Bastad, Sweden.

Soderling started the match on a bad note and got broken in the fifth game to eventually give away the first set by 6 games to 4. The second set did not change the story initially as Seppi secured an early break to lead Soderling by a set and a break. However, the Italian failed to convert three match points later and let the Swedish star comeback into the match by winning the second set 7-5.
The third set brought the best out of both players who gallantly held their serves to push the match into deciding tie-break which Soderling won by 7 points to 5 to complet the marathon 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) win.
Earlier in the day, two time former champion Tommy Robredo registered an upset straight sets victory over second seed Fernando Verdasco to secure his seventh semifinal berth in Bastad. After breaking Verdasco's serve twice in the opening set, Robredo continued his dominance in the match and clinched a couple of more breaks to complete the 6-4, 6-3 win.

In the day's first quarterfinal match, Spanish veteran David Ferrer overwhelmed Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-3 in just over an hour and reach the semifinal where he meets the Italian Seppi.
